GREENVILLE, S.C. (WBTV) - A body was found in a burning car at a South Carolina college over the weekend, according to sister-station WHNS. The body was found at Furman University in Greenville during the day on Saturday, April 19. University police told WHNS that the fire happened near Montague Village, which is off the main campus behind the school’s softball stadium. The area is where the university’s human resources, IT, finance and other offices are.

Part of North Carolina Walmart closed indefinitely after early-morning fire

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) - A Walmart in North Carolina caught fire on Friday morning, closing part of the store indefinitely. The fire broke out around 5 a.m. at the Walmart on Greenville Boulevard in Greenville. Greenville Fire and Rescue said firefighters found smoke coming from the store’s garden center and were able to quickly put it out. The building’s sprinkler system reportedly helped contain the fire to a small area.
Man who robbed Lincoln County bank in broad daylight arrested, police say

LINCOLNTON, N.C. (WBTV) - A man was put behind bars after he allegedly robbed a bank in Lincoln County on Thursday. The robbery happened just before 1:30 p.m. at Peoples Bank on East Main Street in Lincolnton. Lincolnton police did not say exactly how the robbery was carried out, but said the suspect -- Bryan Keith Flowers -- was arrested around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. It is unclear how much money he may have stolen.
Homicide investigation underway at south Charlotte apartments

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Police were investigating a homicide at a south Charlotte apartment building Friday morning. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said shortly before 10 a.m. that the investigation was happening on Cherrycrest Lane, which is off Archdale Drive not far from I-77. Police did not say how many people were killed, nor how they died. Several apartment buildings are in the area. The one where the homicide happened is right behind Archdale Park.
School resource officer arrested in Mecklenburg County

CORNELIUS, N.C. (WBTV) - A resource officer at a Mecklenburg County school was arrested this week after an investigation led to an animal cruelty charge. The initial investigation began after the Cornelius Police Department got a call about a domestic disturbance involving officer Michael Ruballo on Saturday, April 12. While that investigation was happening, police said they found evidence that led to Ruballo and his wife both being charged with animal cruelty.
Crash closes I-85 near busy exit in Gaston County

GASTONIA, N.C. (WBTV) - A crash has had I-85 shut down for hours in Gaston County on Friday morning. The wreck happened around 4:30 a.m. on the southbound side near Exit 17 to Highway 321. All southbound lanes are shut down due to the crash. State transportation officials expect the interstate to be shut down until 8 a.m., and recommended drivers get off on Exit 19 to East Ozark Avenue and take East Ozark Avenue to Highway 321. It is unclear if anyone was hurt in the crash.
Suspect in New York murder arrested in Gaston County, police say

GASTONIA, N.C. (WBTV) - A suspect in a New York murder case was arrested in Gaston County on Friday, police said. The suspect, 27-year-old Phillip Lydell, was arrested at a cluster of apartment buildings at Radio and Barkley streets in Gastonia. Lydell was wanted for his role in a Staten Island homicide on March 28. Several agencies were involved in the arrest, including the Gastonia and Belmont police departments, the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service.
Janitor at North Carolina school sent obscene texts to student, sheriff says

MAYODAN, N.C. (WBTV) - A janitor at a North Carolina school was arrested recently after she was accused of sending obscene messages to a student. The janitor, 28-year-old Gloria Holloway, worked at McMichael High School in Rockingham County. The sheriff’s office said it first got a report about possible inappropriate conduct involving Holloway on March 21. Authorities began investigating the report and found that Holloway sent obscene writing or texts to a student.
