Hogan is a doctoral student in computer science at UC San Diego and lives in Santee. This fall will be my third time teaching introductory computer science inside Richard J. Donovan Correctional Center to a new cohort of UC Irvine students. I began my doctorate degree in the Computing Education lab at UC San Diego in fall 2021 knowing that I wanted to study how to improve computing education in prisons.

As an English major, I love a good used bookstore. While the small town I grew up in only had used books at the thrift store, West Chester has an abundance of stores dedicated to previously-owned novels. Baldwin’s Book Barn is a cult favorite among many WCU readers, and don’t get me wrong, I like perusing the shelves there even as the floors creak under my feet. My personal favorite, however, is Second Reading II, which is located in the Parkway Shopping Center on High Street.
Haley Jakobson Presents Debut Novel “Old Enough” at WCU

As part of this year’s Gender Justice Conference, Haley Jakobson presented her debut novel “Old Enough” on Wednesday, April 3. Peer Educators for The Center for Women and Gender Equity (CWGE), Haley Mattes and Alexis Stakem, co-hosted a book club for “Old Enough” leading up to the event and were prepared with questions for Jakobson. The novel centers on Savannah (or Sav for short) as she navigates her college experience as a bisexual young adult and sexual assault survivor.

On Wednesday, Feb. 28, the Center for Women and Gender Equity welcomed author Sara Ahmed, who presented her lecture “Traveling with Feminist Killjoys” to West Chester University students and faculty. Feminist killjoys are those who speak up when something offensive is said at the table. As you might know from your own familial interactions or life experiences, the person who speaks up at the table is almost never received well.

A dream over 20 years in the making: on December 20, 2023, the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) unanimously appointed Dr. R. Lorraine “Laurie” Bernotsky as the university’s 16th president — officially making her the second female president in the university’s over 150 year history.
