Land councils, Indigenous business groups and the Aboriginal organisation that is responsible for protecting sacred sites in the Northern Territory all say changes to legislation risk real damage to important cultural heritage. Last week, the Country Liberal Party Government led by Lia Finocchiaro passed amendments to the Sacred Sites Act, which it says will simplify and streamline the approval process for development, despite all Aboriginal parliamentarians voting against the bill.

The Northern Territory is increasing its spending on prisons but cutting funding to Aboriginal rangers. CLP Treasurer Bill Yan handed down his first budget on Tuesday, announcing a $60 million increase to Corrections, saying the Budget "prioritises law and order". Mr Yan said the NT has a budget deficit of $10.55 billion, which is expected to rise to $14 billion by 2028-29. READ MOREThe total budget for Corrections is now a record $495 million.

In an historic victory, the Labor government has been returned with an increased majority. The Kenbi Land Claim - which has been running since 1979 - has been finalised. On Thursday, the Australian and Northern Territory governments handed back the final parcels of land on the Cox Peninsula to the Kenbi Land Trust and Larrakia Development Corporation. The land handback includes the Cox Peninsula, nearby islands, and sea Country areas, reaching to the low tide mark, with measures in place to balance sacred site protections with public access.
