    The Dja Dja Wurrung people of central Victoria have become the first Traditional Owner group to begin the process of local treaty making in the state. The Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation (DJAARA) - representing the Dja Dja Wurrung people - has registered with the state's independent treaty umpire, the Treaty Authority, formally flagging that it is ready to negotiate a treaty with the state government.

    Stolen Generations survivors from Western Australia will soon be eligible for compensation for the harm and suffering caused by decades of forced removal policies. Living survivors would be eligible for $85,000 under the state government scheme, which is expected to open for applications later this year. The scheme will only apply to people who were removed as children from their families in WA before July 1st 1972.

Claiming victory at the Labor headquarters in Sydney, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese thanked voters for returning his government to power. “It is with a deep sense of humility and a profound sense of responsibility that the first thing I do tonight is say thank you to the people of Australia for the chance to continue to serve the best nation on Earth,” he said.
