Set in the Netherlands in 1961, the novel opens with Isabel unearthing a shard of blue and white china in her vegetable garden, where she is clearing away the plants that are rotting in the late spring due to an unseasonable frost. Isabel’s orderly, quiet life is about to be disrupted.
