    To facilitate the building’s modern use, a 1950s kitchen extension was demolished and replaced with a new brick and timber one, which is minimal yet warm with touches of Mid-century Modern; think exposed pine rafters, oak cabinetry and Ketley Brick floor tiles. A separate studio in the garden also serves the resident artists. Wang has expertly crafted the balance between home, art space and historic house, but it wasn’t easy: ‘There are so many contradictions,’ she says.

    Naturally, the hotel is in a historic location, with strong symbolic value: it faces the circular first-century BC Mausoleum of Augustus, the first Roman emperor, and the Ara Pacis, the altar that celebrates the Pax Romana – the period of peace imposed by the authorities – preserved within the museum of the same name designed by Richard Meier.

    A busy rail hub in northwest England feels like an unlikely portal to the golden age of train travel.
