When general manager Dana Brown took the top job in the Houston Astros organization, it came in the wake of some really puzzling decisions made by owner Jim Crane. The most offensive, of course, was signing Jose Abreu to a three-year deal, though that has since been remedied. But Crane also handed out a rather costly deal to reliever Rafael Montero. The Astros traded Montero to the Braves on Tuesday, meaning that all of Crane's misadventures with Houston's roster are now gone.

If you were to ask most Houston Astros fans how they feel about the Kyle Tucker trade, you'd probably receive a lot of negative responses. Rookie Cam Smith — the Astros' prized acquisition from the offseason trade with the Chicago Cubs — is struggling, while Tucker has been arguably baseball's best hitter at the outset of the 2025 season. Some fans would undoubtedly state that the Astros made a big mistake this offseason. However, trades never quite that simple.

No team can guess exactly how good every player is going to be when making moves during their window of contention. Some guys are bet on and they don't work out and others get moved to turn into quality big leaguers or better with their new teams. However, the Houston Astros have been better than most organizations at picking and choosing the right guys to stay and go.

The Houston Astros' pitching staff was already getting tested early this season. After an offseason where Houston lost both Yusei Kikuchi and Justin Verlander, the team only added one rotation arm in Hayden Wesneski. With Luis Garcia suffering a major setback in his recovery, the Astros' gambit that arrivals from the injured list would provide reinforcement wasn't looking good.

While the Houston Astros had a very busy offseason, the one area they did not address all that much was the starting rotation. Both Yusei Kikuchi and Justin Verlander left via free agency, and Houston seemed to be banking on the return of some of their injured arms. The notable exception, of course, was the addition of former Chicago Cubs starter Hayden Wesneski, whom the Astros added as part of the Kyle Tucker trade.
