SLOs have long been a staple for DevOps teams to monitor the health of their applications and infrastructure. They're incredibly useful in informing decisions to prioritize feature vs. reliability work, in addition to ensuring organizations can deliver on the service levels promised to their customers. Now, as digital trends have shifted, more and more teams are looking to adapt this model for the mobile environment. This, however, is not without its challenges.

Are your developers on PagerDuty? That’s the core question, and for most teams the answer is emphatically “yes.” This is a huge change from a few years ago when, unless you did not have DevOps or SRE teams, the answer was a resounding “no.” So, what’s changed? A long-term trend is happening across large and small companies, and that is the convergence of developers, those who code apps, and DevOps, those who maintain the systems on which apps run and developers code.

Agent-based approaches to real user monitoring (RUM) simply do not work. If you are pitched to install an "agent" in your mobile or web environments, you should run for the hills. Start with: What Is Real User Monitoring in an Observability World? It Is Not APM "Agents" - Part 1The best apps run without the assumption of constant network connectivity. They are running compiled code on a device out in the wild, not just a series of always connected services.

When we think of “observability,” most of us define it as “metrics, logs and traces.” It’s not. What we really mean is to enrich and observe those pre-defined sets of data and then layer analysis on top of them to better measure and understand business Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) — proactively. In other words, observability isn’t just about collecting and sorting data sets. It’s not just about alerts, correlations and uptime.

Agent-based approaches to real user monitoring (RUM) simply do not work. If you are pitched to install an "agent" in your mobile or web environments, you should run for the hills. The world is now all about end-users. This paradigm of focusing on the end-user was simply not true a few years ago, as backend metrics generally revolved around uptime, SLAs, latency, and the like. DevOps teams always pitched and presented the metrics they thought were the most correlated to the end-user experience.
