It’s an anxious time for The New Stack’s readers. Only 17% of TNS readers who participated in a February VoxPop survey were confident enough to answer “No way I’m getting laid off” when asked about the possibility of losing their jobs in 2024. Few think their jobs are at risk because of a lack of skills (3%), lack of return on investment (ROI) on their technical projects (7%) or poor personal performance (9%). By contrast, 64% fear they might be laid off as their employer seeks to cut costs.

Get those punch cards back out!After 20 years of development, the open source GnuCOBOL “has reached an industrial maturity and can compete with proprietary offers in all environments,” said OCamlPro founder and GnuCOBOL contributor Fabrice Le Fessant, in a FOSDEM talk about the technology. GnuCOBOL turns COBOL source code into executable applications. It is very cross-platform, running Linux, BSD, many proprietary Unixes, macOS, and Windows, even Android.

The use of cloud to run workloads is on the rise this year, according to a new study of tech professionals and IT leaders. Fifty-eight percent of the more than 750 people surveyed said they are planning to migrate more workloads to the cloud in 2024, up from 44% who said the same in the 2023 survey. Organizations in the survey by Flexera, an IT management software company, appeared to be growing more sophisticated in the ways in which they use cloud resources.
