The North American Thoroughbred breeding season got off to a slower than usual start this year, with commercial breeders delaying their mating decisions for months with the hope of gathering more information to bolster their stallion selections or negotiating a lower stud fee. BloodHorse MarketWatch reported last summer that the Thoroughbred foal crop is predominantly a commercial product, with 51-52% of foals in the United States and Canada, respectively, being offered at auction.

Derma Moon (JPN) became the first winner for Shadai Stallion Station's Mind Your Biscuits , who was a multiple grade 1 winner in the United States and Dubai, after capturing a May 25 maiden special weight at Tokyo Racecourse. Funny Hill Farm bred the bay 3-year-old colt out of the winning Screen Hero mare Derma Ararechan, who has produced two other winners so far.

Spendthrift Farm's freshman sire and grade 1 winner Rock Your World sired his first winner when his daughter Color Comin' In won a $115,272 maiden special weight May 15 at Churchill Downs. Raced by CKDS Racing Stable and trainer Norm Casse, Color Comin' In overcame a slow start and advanced into a stalking position along the rail at the half-mile pole and then took the lead with a quarter-mile to go. She drew off to win by three lengths with Luis Saez in the saddle. The final time was :58.14.
