A man who fatally shot another man at the Campland on the Bay RV resort in Pacific Beach was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years to life in state prison. Michael Lawrence Callahan, 40, was convicted by a San Diego jury for the May 16, 2023, shooting death of 49-year-old Ryan Abbott. Jurors acquitted Callahan of first-degree murder, but found him guilty of second-degree murder, plus an allegation of using a gun in the homicide.

More sick sea animals are washing up along the coast, this time off Mexico. Officials there are warning the public in Rosarito to stay away from sick sea lions. Officials believe the pinnipeds are being affected by domoic acid poisoning. "We continue to respond to reports of strandings from the public," said Joaquín Mercado de Santiago, the head of Civil Protection and Fire Department.

A man who was fatally stabbed last week at a Grant Hill-area home, allegedly in the midst of a confrontation during which he tried to attack his girlfriend, was identified by police on Wednesday. Joshua Cruz, 23, was stabbed in the torso early Saturday in the 200 block of 28th Street, according to the San Diego Police Department. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The former vice president of research and development at Qualcomm was convicted Tuesday of scheming to defraud the San Diego tech giant, his then-employer, out of $180 million. Prosecutors said that while working for Qualcomm, Karim Arabi, 58, hid his role in the invention of a new microchip technology and the technology's sale to Qualcomm. The purported inventor of the technology was Arabi's sister, Sheida Alan, then a grad student.

A man fatally struck by a car in Carmel Valley over the weekend has been identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office. Mark Maisel, 70, and his dog were both hit around 6 p.m. Sunday by a westbound Lexus in the 5000 block of Brookburn Drive, according to the San Diego Police Department. On Tuesday, the ME's office said Maisel's wife had crossed Brookburn Drive ahead of him and was waiting for him to follow.
