On Wednesday, the San Diego Sheriff's Department identified a police officer and the man he shot following a disturbance at a library in San Diego. On May 8 around 4:20 p.m., officers responded after a witness reported a man vandalizing property and wielding a hatchet inside the Pacific Beach/Taylor Library, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

An incident on Monday night is shedding light on a dangerous situation that seems to be happening more near the Gaslamp. Just after midnight, a man tried to crawl between the cars of a freight train after it had stopped on the tracks near the convention center. As he tried to do so, police say, the train began to move, severing the man's leg below the shin.

Shelter officials said the nearly unprecedented total underscores the urgent need for animal services across Southern California. In Escondido, an overwhelmed pet owner surrendered 96 guinea pigs. San Diego's Catholics and others interested in the selection of the 267th pope watched with excitement Thursday morning as white smoke poured from the chimney at the Vatican above the Sistine Chapel. A little over an hour later, that excitement gave way to surprise as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American missionary from Chicago was revealed to be the new bishop of Rome. It didn't take long for the Diocese of San Diego to react, welcoming the newly named Pope Leo XIV on social media.
