Culture needs disruptors. Fashion too. In 1995 Todd Solondz shook up independent film with Welcome to the Dollhouse, Coolio hit the top of the charts with “Gangsta’s Paradise,” and eBay changed the internet forever. Minimalism, meanwhile, ruled the runway. “Fussy,” the late stylist Polly Mellen declared in that year’s soon to be canonic documentary, Unzipped. “Finished.” It was a time of little ornamentation, clean lines, neutral palettes. Quiet luxury, long before the phrase was coined.

The Veil and the Vault is not the title of a forgotten film noir. It was the working name the architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro used for the protagonist at the center of a very Los Angeles story: the art collection of Edythe and Eli Broad.

Queen Elizabeth II was said to be a devoted Downton Abbey viewer. Mick Jagger’s devotion to the Slow Horses books paved the way for him to write the theme song for the series’ television adaptation. Brian Eno has quipped that even if the Velvet Underground’s debut album only sold 30,000 copies, “everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!”Which is all to say, everyone’s a fan of something.
