Kansas pregame reported on Tuesday morning that former Smith Center High School Football coach Roger Barta who guided the Redmen to a historic winning steak and multiple state championships, passed away at the age of 79. Barta led Smith Center for 35 seasons from 1978 to 2012 and along the way the Redmen captured eight state championships including five in a row between 2004 and 2008.

According to Kansas Pregame, Head coach Greg Heinze who led the Panthers to a 12-0 record received a standing ovation from those in attendance and assistant coach Jack Stoller was also honored though he was not present.

The weekend began on Friday night with the Twin Valley League All-Stars prevailing over their NPL counterparts in a three-game sweep by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 26-24.

Several 8-Man Football players will hit the gridiron one more time on Saturday, June 7 for the Kansas 8-Man All-Star Games, an event celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Both games will be played at Trojan Stadium in Beloit with the Division ll game kicking off at 10 a.m. and the Division l game starting at 1:30 p.m.The games feature seniors playing one last High School game before moving on to the next phase of their lives whether on or off the field.

Coming off a Regional Championship and the first State Tournament appearance in nearly a decade, three members of the Russell-Victoria Broncos Baseball team were recognized with an All State selection by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches. Junior Sam Thielen was selected to the First team as an Outfielder, senior Mason Rohr was Honorable Mention at Catcher and junior Max Evans was an Honorable Mention selection as a Middle Infielder.
