Kansas pregame reported on Tuesday morning that former Smith Center High School Football coach Roger Barta who guided the Redmen to a historic winning steak and multiple state championships, passed away at the age of 79. Barta led Smith Center for 35 seasons from 1978 to 2012 and along the way the Redmen captured eight state championships including five in a row between 2004 and 2008.

Coming off a Regional Championship and the first State Tournament appearance in nearly a decade, three members of the Russell-Victoria Broncos Baseball team were recognized with an All State selection by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches. Junior Sam Thielen was selected to the First team as an Outfielder, senior Mason Rohr was Honorable Mention at Catcher and junior Max Evans was an Honorable Mention selection as a Middle Infielder.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association's 2025 State Track meet got underway Friday at sun-splashed Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University. Russell High School is represented by seven athletes at the Class 3A State meet....six girls and one boy.. Results are as follows:Jaden Ney tied for sixth in the Pole Vault and in the process set a new school record for the event. Aubrey Birney capped her high school career with a ninth place finish in the High Jump.

MANHATTAN-Staked to an early 3-1 lead, the Russell-Victoria Baseball team could not hold on and saw their season end in a 10-3 loss to Humboldt in the first round of the Class 3A State Tournament, Thursday at Tointon Family Stadium. The game was scoreless after an inning and a half before the Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Kyler Isbell which brought home Cole Mathes who had led off the inning with a triple.

Russell High School golfer Jake Mooney shaved three strokes off his first day score to finish with a two-day total of 159, good enough for a 15th place tie at the Class 3A State Tournament at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City. Mooney, who was nine over par on Tuesday, improved to six over par on Wednesday to finish 12 strokes behind state champion Grant Waterson of Hesston High School who finished with a score of 147.

Russell High School golfer Jake Mooney, motivated by missing the cut at last year's Class 3A State Tournament made sure his outing would be different this time around. Mooney turned in a nine over par 81 during the first round of the Class 3A Tournament at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 25th place, 11 strokes behind tournament leader Landon Langston of Wichita Collegiate.

The Russell-Victoria Baseball team will make its first appearance in a State Tournament since 2016 when they travel to Manhattan for the Class 3A Tournament which begins on Thursday, May 29 at Kansas State University's Tointon Family Stadium. The Broncos with a record of 18-11 are the number seven seed and will face second-seeded Humboldt (23-4) at 3:30 p.m. on May 29.
