In the 2015 Paris Agreement, governments promised to adopt policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit global warming. The most obvious tool is to increase the price of fossil fuels like gasoline. Some countries, especially in Europe, have done exactly this. Yet, in many countries gasoline taxes remain low. And a substantial number of governments explicitly have subsidies that allow citizens to buy gasoline below market prices.

South Korea’s constitutional court ruled that parts of the country’s climate legislation fail to protect the rights of future generations. This August 2024 ruling echoes a landmark case from Germany where the court similarly found existing climate legislation insufficiently ambitious and precise to protect the rights of future generations. But it also reflects a broader trend where domestic courts hold governments accountable for failing to uphold their climate commitments.

In the latest Good Authority podcast, I talked with University of Minnesota professor Tanisha Fazal about her new book, Military Medicine and the Hidden Costs of War (Oxford University Press, 2024). The book documents how major changes in military medicine have dramatically reduced American fatalities in the wars fought by the United States. This is obviously great news. However, it also leads the U.S. to dramatically underestimate the costs of war.

The European elections in early June resulted in a win for far-right nationalist parties, although not by as much as predicted. The largest gains were in the continent’s biggest countries: France and Germany. These two countries are also favorites to win Europe’s other big June event: the European soccer championships (EURO 2024).
