But the cabin and trail crew – like many jobs in the Forest Service – is a different kind of seasonal work.

Listen to the full interview with Keith Nyitray:There are some big walks in North America. The Appalachian Trail comes to mind, as does the Pacific Crest Trail. About 3,000 people a year set out to hike the full length of each of those.

The Prevention team at Sitka Counseling conducts a Community Readiness and Substance Use survey every two-to-four years. It’s a pretty broad look at how prepared the community is to address the problems that come with substance misuse among youth, like the availability of treatment services, and the overall awareness of local leadership of the issue. But a component of the survey goes into Sitka’s middle- and high schools, and the preliminary findings are mixed.

The Heritage & Cultural Tourism Conference is returning to Sitka this spring. The three-day event brings together visitor industry leaders from across the country to share ideas about tourism best practices in Indigenous communities. Sitka Chamber of Commerce and Visit Sitka! executive director Rachel Roy says the annual conference started about 20 years ago, paused briefly, and then resumed as demand grew for authentic and meaningful cultural experiences.
