During the 1980s, All Nations Christian Reformed Church in Halifax was involved in “Sunday Suppers,” a partnership between local churches that helped feed the homeless in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. He became a Christian in his teens, married at 25 and began pastoring a small rural church for pennies – sometimes potatoes, if that’s all his parishioners had. It was 1770, Wainsgate, England. There’s no earthly reason for his name to be remembered 250 years later . . . but it is. He’s in our hymnals as the author of “Blest be the tie that binds.”You know the words, right?

“In your relationships with one another,” Paul wrote (from prison!), “have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2:5). That’s the verse chosen as the theme of the Christian Reformed Church’s (CRC) Synod 2023, taking place this week in Grand Rapids, Michigan – and its focus on relationships is a fitting one. That’s because members of the CRC denomination – like the ancient church in Philippi, perhaps – are having an increasingly difficult time living in ecclesiastical harmony.
