HONG KONG For nearly two hours on a windy Sunday in February, Henry Hurren took a beating in the waters off a largely uninhabited island in Hong Kong, trying to surf a short wave for a few moments at a time. The half-hour ferry ride there from the Chinese territory’s main island was bustling with day trippers. Hurren, 32, passed outdoor restaurants and families who had camped overnight as he hiked to the spot he paddled out from in a wet suit.

Israel reopened the Kerem Shalom crossing into the Gaza Strip, the Israeli agency overseeing aid deliveries in the territory said Wednesday, reinstating one of two critical entry points for humanitarian aid that it had closed. The Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and Gaza had been closed since a Hamas rocket attack from Gaza on Sunday killed four soldiers in the area. On Tuesday, the Israeli military mounted an incursion that closed the Rafah crossing on Gaza's border with Egypt.

Cuba has arrested 17 people in connection with what its government says is a network recruiting its citizens to fight in Russia's war in Ukraine, according to a Cuban government official. The head of Cuba's criminal investigation department, César Rodriguez, said late Thursday on Canal Caribe, a state-run news channel, that one of the people arrested was responsible for organizing efforts to recruit inside Cuba.
