MONTPELIER – Several hundred people gathered at the Statehouse in Montpelier, Wednesday, Feb. 5, to protest actions taken by the Trump administration. Hundreds of Vermonters joined a protest against the Trump administration on the steps of the Statehouse, part of a national movement to resist President Donald Trump’s actions since he came into office two weeks ago. The movement, titled 50501, is a decentralized initiative to bring protests to every state capitol in the nation.

This commentary is by Carter Neubieser, a Progressive city councilor representing Ward 1 in Burlington. It is hard to focus on anything other than Trump and his oligarch friends at the federal level. Reports of ICE in Burlington, federal funding freezes that threaten critical services we all rely on, and open-air-corruption feels overwhelming, but we cannot give in to despair or fear. If that sounds radical or alarmist it shouldn’t — here’s a small but truly horrifying example.

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Treasurer’s Office announced Wednesday that a program aimed at expanding retirement account options for small employers is now open for enrollment. Vermont Saves is a retirement savings program that operates like an employer-sponsored individual retirement account with automatic payroll contributions similar to a 401(k). State Treasurer Mike Pieciak said an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 Vermont workers don’t have access to a retirement account through their employer.
