The Alabama House of Representatives passed a bill creating the crime of human smuggling if someone knowingly transports into Alabama another person known to be in the United States illegally. Senate Bill 53 would make human smuggling a Class C felony. The crime is defined as "a person commits the crime of human smuggling if he or she knowingly transports into this state another individual if he or she knows is an illegal alien." Exceptions were added to the bill for the crime of human smuggling.
