It was a gift from a fellow breast cancer thriver during a fundraising event for the Stand with Estela Casas Cancer Foundation. With the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 36, Maria Delgado Cazares led the charge on October 11th to raise money for the foundation.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – I’ve been watching the neighbor’s pomegranate tree grow, watching the fruit turn from green to a beautiful shade of burgundy. Their tree produces hundreds of delicious pomegranates, and they don’t mind people going into their front yard to pick a few. I’ve asked for permission to gather a few. This is a batch we picked last night. We’ll squeeze them for juice that’s rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and vitamin K.

I know an eight-year-old role model who is an example to her peers and grownups. Kaylee Brown earned the title of Royal International Miss Texas Role Model. My mom loved to play Bingo. Every Friday, Saturday, and sometimes Sunday after church, you’d find her at a Bingo parlor on Montana. She’d be surrounded by paper Bingo cards and different-colored markers in each hand. She would win often. Most importantly, she honed-in on her social skills and kept her mind sharp. “Buenas noches Mrs. Casas, buena suerte!” She would smile, find her seat, and distribute the play cards on the table.

I remember that day like it was yesterday. Early Saturday morning, I found her lying upright in her bed with her eyes closed. She looked so peaceful. Her journey home had begun three weeks before when she went into hospice care for congestive heart failure. I remember her eyes, but I barely remember her voice.

I remember like it was yesterday when I told him in the hallway that I was retiring. He smiled at me and said, “I will miss you, but you made my life better.” Whoa! This honest, simple, yet profound phrase touched me deeply. I teared up, gave him a hug, and said thank you.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – I have to admit I don’t watch a lot of TV. When I turn on the TV, I like doing something like peeling roasted Chiles from Hatch, New Mexico, or sewing a hemline on a skirt. We picked up 50 pounds of Chiles that I peel and freeze for the year. We finish the batch close to harvest in August or September, and I can sew pretty well by hand.
