Harpswell Community School was briefly locked down on Wednesday after police received a call about a man with a rifle who turned out to be defending his chickens. Deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an address on Harpswell Road after a caller said a man, who they thought was barred from possessing guns, had walked behind the house possibly holding a rifle, according to the sheriff’s office.

An Illinois man accused of making death threats to Maine officials pleaded guilty on Monday in federal court in Bangor to making threatening interstate communications. Massimo Frangella, 24, sent seven identical emails to Maine public officials from his email account with “You’re going to die” in the subject line, according to a court document written by federal prosecutors.

A New Brunswick man was sentenced on Monday to serve one year in prison followed by three years of supervised release for illegally crossing the international border and bringing a controlled substance. In September 2024, U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped Nathan Paul Curran-McQuade, 31, in the Aroostook County town of Caswell for allegedly entering the country illegally from Canada, according to court documents cited by the U.S. Department of Justice in a news release.

The U.S. Coast Guard is trying to find the person who made a distress call from dry land late Sunday night. Between 11 p.m. Sunday and 12:30 a.m. Monday, the Coast Guard said its Northern New England Command Center received multiple calls of a mariner in distress over VHF Channel 16, which is reserved for international hailing and distress calls.
