Harpswell Community School was briefly locked down on Wednesday after police received a call about a man with a rifle who turned out to be defending his chickens. Deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an address on Harpswell Road after a caller said a man, who they thought was barred from possessing guns, had walked behind the house possibly holding a rifle, according to the sheriff’s office.

An Illinois man accused of making death threats to Maine officials pleaded guilty on Monday in federal court in Bangor to making threatening interstate communications. Massimo Frangella, 24, sent seven identical emails to Maine public officials from his email account with “You’re going to die” in the subject line, according to a court document written by federal prosecutors.

A New Brunswick man was sentenced on Monday to serve one year in prison followed by three years of supervised release for illegally crossing the international border and bringing a controlled substance. In September 2024, U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped Nathan Paul Curran-McQuade, 31, in the Aroostook County town of Caswell for allegedly entering the country illegally from Canada, according to court documents cited by the U.S. Department of Justice in a news release.

The U.S. Coast Guard is trying to find the person who made a distress call from dry land late Sunday night. Between 11 p.m. Sunday and 12:30 a.m. Monday, the Coast Guard said its Northern New England Command Center received multiple calls of a mariner in distress over VHF Channel 16, which is reserved for international hailing and distress calls.

A list of “sanctuary jurisdictions” posted to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s website last week that included three entries in Maine is no longer there. The list was created by DHS to name communities where it said officials were defying federal immigration enforcement laws. Hancock County was one of three Maine locations named in the list along with Cumberland County and the city of Portland.

A 19-year-old Wells man died on Wednesday evening after a collision with a car in the southern Maine town of Kennebunk. Police were called to the scene of the collision at the intersection of Alewive Road (Route 35) and Walker Road at about 6 p.m.Based on a preliminary investigation, the Kennebunk Police Department said it believes Cameron Mahoney was driving a 2009 Yamaha motorcycle east on Alewive Road as Emma Clough, 28, of Sanford, was traveling west on the same road in a 2018 Honda Fit.

A “data security issue” that prompted St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor to temporarily turn off its data systems was a cyberattack, a spokesperson for the hospital confirmed on Wednesday. Covenant Health, the parent company of St. Joseph Hospital, “became aware of irregularities impacting connectivity across the organization” on Monday, the hospital’s Chief Communications Officer Karen Sullivan said.

A foreboding weather forecast didn’t keep Memorial Day travelers away from Maine as much as the state anticipated, according to data collected on roadways around the state over the holiday weekend. Headed into the holiday weekend, the Maine Department of Transportation anticipated a drop of 2.5 percent from the same weekend last year, based largely on the nor’easter that swept across the state on Friday.
