Okay, my friends in coffee, let’s have a serious chat. You know how you feel about coffee. For some it’s that morning kick. For others, it’s the process. For many of you, it’s about the taste and pleasure. And for some of you, it’s all the above. But for all of us, it’s about having coffee as part of our lives. We take it for granted, but climate change is messing with our precious beverage, and it’s not pretty. I warn you: this article’s going to have some doom and gloom.

The late summer air hung heavy with the scents of pine needles and damp earth as Framke and I began our trek, the Kinsol Trestle rising above us like a wooden cathedral. Whenever I travel to Ottawa, I know to make some time for the wonderful splendors of nature that surround the capital of Canada. My most recent visit this late spring was no different. My first day off, I woke up especially early. The starting light of dawn peeked through my window, casting a soft hue over my hotel room. The morning air was crisp, imbued with the invigorating promise of late spring.

As the first rays of dawn made their way over the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains, I found myself wandering the streets of a town I’ve waited my whole life to visit: Banff, Alberta. I didn’t come here to ski (the season for that had ended a month before); I came to hike and bike the trails, and just to decompress a bit before a business meeting I had in Calgary towards the end of the week. Banff is one of the places on my bucket list to visit, and I was finally here.
