Every price range is out there too, from $100 on past $2,500 and more. Companies like Baratza have a product range from $150 to $900. Specialty companies like Option-O have grinders from $375 to $2,650. Italian makers like Eureka and Ceado have grinders from $250 through $2,500.

I love coffees with a deep, rich story, and this most definitely is one of them. Back in 1999, Thom Owen of Sweet Marias bought several lots of a coffee no commercial roaster would buy, because the beans were so tiny, they would fall through the screens on a commercial roasting machine. That coffee was the Ka’anapali Estate Moka, from Maui, a region of Hawaii not especially known for growing coffee (Kona’s the main region).

Super Automatics, (more frequently referred to as Bean to Cup machines, thanks to Jim Hoffmann’s popular videos) are a recent invention but now moving into maturity. The machine technology was invented and introduced to the world by a company called Acorto, back in 1990 (founded by Duke Goss and Kyle Anderson, the latter of which went on to start Baratza and design consumer grinders).

Perhaps not, but without her or Costa Rican coffees, we might just not have specialty coffee today. Knutsen was a renowned figure in the specialty coffee industry, often referred to as the “Godmother of Specialty Coffee.” Born in Norway in 1922, Knutsen played a pivotal role in shaping the coffee landscape, particularly in the United States.
