Although the vital roles of circulation, and the heart, were defined by William Harvey in the 17th century, and the stethoscope was described by René Laennec in 1816, it was not until the decade from 1895 to 1905 that development of 3 clinically important technologies—sphygmomanometry, electrocardiography, and radiology—led to the birth of cardiology as a medical specialty. This Perspective provides an overview of cardiology in 1924 and how it has changed in the past century.
