DERBY — Schools in the city were locked down Thursday morning after two bullets were found on a school bus, according to a robocall from a Derby Middle School administrator. Police were on scene at the middle school/high school campus on Chatfield Street as of 9:55 a.m. conducting an investigation, which includes checking lockers in the middle school. The bullets were found on bus 55, according to the robocall.

ANSONIA – The new state budget includes a section that forces city officials to appear in front of an advisory committee to review finances. Mayor David Cassetti said the appearances are not necessary and that the provision is the work of state Rep. Kara Rochelle, a Democrat who represents Ansonia and Derby. He complained no one gave city officials a head’s up. “It’s all political, there’s no question about it,” Cassetti, a Republican, said.

DERBY – A westside father of two said he is seeking the Republican nomination for mayor. Scott Derby, 60, made his intention known last month during a fundraiser for the Derby Republican Town Committee. “Scott Derby brings a fresh perspective with innovative skills and ideas and the public will see over the next five months he is the right man for the job at hand,” said Gino DiGiovanni, Jr., the city GOP chairman.

DERBY — The city turned 350 on May 13 and “Derby 350 Weekend” is scheduled to start 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 30. DERBY – Members of the city’s planning and zoning commission May 20 approved a plan from Griffin Health to replace a portable MRI trailer with a modular building. The vote was unanimous. Currently Griffin Hospital houses an MRI machine in a portable trailer on the Spring Street side of the hospital campus, near loading docks. That trailer will be replaced with a custom-built modular building that will attach directly to the hospital.

Here are the results:Shall the city portion of the budget, as recommended by the board of aldermen of $29,652,920 for the fiscal year 2026 be adopted? Yes: 166No: 648Shall the board of education portion of the budget, as recommended by the board of aldermen, $39,560,719 for the City of Ansonia for the fiscal year 2026 be adopted? DERBY – Tours of the historic Sterling Opera House will be included as part of the weekend festivities later this month celebrating Derby’s 350th anniversary. Members of the Sterling Opera House Commission will host the tours from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, May 31. Dana Florenza, chairwoman of the Sterling Opera House Commission, said the tours are appropriate because the opera house is historically significant to Derby. “It’s very significant for the 350th.

DERBY – Mayor Joseph DiMartino talked with the city’s capital planning commission April 28 about possibly borrowing $5 million to purchase new fire trucks and other big-ticket items. A referendum could be scheduled for November. However, before that happens, members of Derby Capital Planning Commission would have to make a recommendation to the Derby Board of Aldermen & Alderwomen (BOA/A), whose members would then decide whether to schedule a referendum.

SHELTON – A 54-year-old city man who possessed explicit images of himself and a toddler pleaded guilty to two child sex crimes in federal court Thursday (May 15). Ross DeLibro pleaded guilty to producing child pornography and possessing child pornography. He faces maximum terms of up to 50 years in federal prison for the crimes. DeLibro is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 14 in federal court in Bridgeport.

DERBY — Be sure to wish the City of Derby a happy birthday today (May 13, 2025) as it turns 350 years old!That’s right, Derby was incorporated on May 13, 1775. Mayor Joseph DiMartino’s administration established the Derby 350 Anniversary Celebration Committee, whose members have a year’s worth of activities, parties and concerts planned. Derby City/Town Clerk Marc Garofalo is the committee’s chairman. There are several events planned for today, the actual 350th.
