SINGAPORE - Have a very decadent dad you would like to spoil for Father’s Day? Consider Chinese restaurant chain Peach Garden’s show-stopping giant Buddha Jumps Over The Wall longevity bun that weighs a staggering 4kg and is priced at an eye-popping $1,000++. Accounting for the extravagant price tag are luxurious ingredients such as abalone, fish maw, dried scallops, sea cucumber and shark’s fin - in a rich double-boiled chicken and pork broth - all loaded into the fluffy bun.

SINGAPORE – If you have not been able to score a coveted seat at the famed Kichi Kichi Omurice restaurant in Kyoto, Japan, you can now try your luck in Singapore. Helmed by Japanese chef Motokichi Yukimura, the 14-seat restaurant is renowned for theatrically serving the Insta-famous omurice (Japanese omelette rice), where a perfectly cooked omelette is sliced open to drape over a bed of fried rice. Chef Yukimura, 69, has 314,000 followers on his @kichikichi_omurice Instagram account.

SINGAPORE – After opening to much fanfare in September 2024 at lifestyle cluster New Bahru, Italian restaurant Somma looks to keep the momentum with its first menu change for what it calls its Solterra season. Sol refers to the sun, while terra means earth. The intricate dishes celebrate spring and summer produce, and I find myself enjoying several vegetable elements across the menu ($268++ for six courses). There is a four-course Saturday lunch at $168++ too.

SINGAPORE – My first time trying Xiao Hun Mian in Taiwan was right after the 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Hualien city on April 3, 2024. I was with The Straits Times’ Taiwan correspondent Yip Wai Yee at Taipei’s Banqiao Station, and she recommended having lunch there. At the time, still fairly shaken from the tremors we had felt, I barely registered the name of the store. I remember only diving into a bowl of wonderfully thick and chewy noodles paired with a comforting mala beef bone broth.

SINGAPORE – Popular food festival GastroBeats makes its return once again, running from May 29 to June 22 at the Bayfront Event Space next to Marina Bay Sands. Judging from the media preview on May 27, this may well be my favourite edition so far for its curation of food vendors, plenty of photo spots and overall ambience with live music and spacious seating. It is pet-friendly too.
