SINGAPORE – A 43-year-old woman who is on trial for the murder of her boyfriend had a stormy relationship with the man, the High Court heard when she took the stand on April 17. When asked by her lawyer how she got along with the victim, Nguyen Ngoc Giau, 43, said through a Vietnamese interpreter: “Every day go drink. Drink, then quarrel.” Twice the quarrels ended with her going to the hospital, she said. On one occasion, both were arrested for fighting at the void deck.

SINGAPORE – Consumers and merchants resolving disputes at the Small Claims Tribunals can now opt for documents submitted by the other party to be translated into Chinese, Malay or Tamil using artificial intelligence (AI). In Singapore, documents submitted in court must be in English. The translation service is the first initiative launched through a collaboration between the Singapore courts and American legal start-up Harvey aimed at developing a generative AI program for users of the tribunals.

SINGAPORE – Less than a year after he paid $490,000 for a Bentley Mulsanne, alleged fraudster Ng Yu Zhi traded in the luxury car for an Aston Martin Rapide he bought for a man who is believed to be a family member. More details of Ng’s lavish car purchases emerged on April 15 when two car dealers took the stand in his ongoing criminal trial in the High Court. In total, he is said to have spent more than $21 million on about 20 luxury cars.

SINGAPORE – A 33-year-old man admitted on April 14 that he had sexually abused his stepdaughter over more than three years, when she was between nine and 12 years old. Prosecutors told the High Court that after the matter was reported to the police, both the man and the girl’s mother tried to pressure the victim to retract her allegations. The victim’s mother blamed her for reporting the abuse, and believed that the girl had lied in order to gain freedom.

SINGAPORE - An 86-year-old woman with dementia drew up a lasting power of attorney (LPA), choosing her 90-year-old brother as the person she would like to make decisions on her behalf when she loses the ability to do so. After her only child learnt about this, he filed an application asking the court to revoke the LPA on grounds that his mother did not have the mental capacity to sign the document.
