SINGAPORE - A woman pursued her claim against her former romantic partner for sexual assault in the civil courts, after the authorities assessed that a criminal case could not be made out. The two, who were colleagues in the Ministry of Defence, had been dating between June 2015 and December the same year. Though the romantic relationship ended, they had remained friends. In July 2016, the woman invited the man over to her place for sex but changed her mind after she sobered up.

SINGAPORE – Annie (not her real name) cursorily skimmed through a letter her former husband sent from prison, barely registering his declarations of love and regret. Once, his words would have reduced her to an emotional mess, reminding her of the life they had built, and the pain of his betrayal. But now, her eyes are dry and her heart unmoved. If she replies at all, it is usually a few short lines about their four children. “I don’t love him any more,” she said.

SINGAPORE – Annie (not her real name) was one of the four victims in a disturbing case where husbands plotted with others to drug their own wives. The unconscious women were then sexually violated. The man Annie married in 2008 – and has since divorced – was among the seven men who have been convicted and sentenced for their involvement in the ring. Annie’s former husband, who was referred to as J in media reports, had facilitated the most number of rapes.
