This time of passage between the German federal election and the formation of a government has something unsettling about it. The old is over, the new has not yet begun – a perceived liminal space of being ungoverned and insecure opens up, even if reason and Article 39(1) Sentence 2, Article 69(3) of the Basic Law assure that it isn’t so.

Last Sunday, somewhere between 33rd Street and 6th Avenue, we found ourselves among thousands of people in MAGA hats and red T-shirts waiting to attend Donald Trump’s rally – block by block, hour after hour. The attendees came from Upstate New York or even other boroughs of the city, feverishly excited to finally see Donald Trump in person at Madison Square Garden. Some of them, as they told us, regularly travel around the country to attend his rallies.

Every lawyer knows that law and its language are malleable tools that can serve different functions. Over the past year, one of these has gained increasing significance: law’s capacity to act as a medium of communication. At a time where other channels are gradually collapsing, with hostility and silence replacing dialogue and debate, law offers a way to articulate our disagreements within the confines of its vocabulary, rules and methods.

I am looking forward to the coming week with a sense of excitement. There are several reasons for this: Firstly, on Friday, my new play Ein Volksbürger will premiere, starring Fabian Hinrichs in the lead role and directed by Nicola Hümpel of Nico and the Navigators. As with Ein Volkskanzler, it explores a scenario: Suppose someone came along and, with a newly founded movement, amidst the ruins of the existing political party system, win a state election.

Bald ist es wieder so weit: Vom 14. Februar bis 24. März 2024 halten Abtreibungsgegner:innen weltweit sogenannte „Mahnwachen“ vor Beratungsstellen und Abtreibungseinrichtungen ab, um Abtreibungen zu verhindern. Dahinter steht die US-amerikanische christliche Organisation „40 Days For Life“, die inzwischen international Anti-Abtreibungsproteste koordiniert – ihr Slogan: „The Beginning of the End of Abortion“. Auch in München und Pforzheim wurden wieder Proteste angemeldet.
