    When Western Michigan took care of business against Boston University, 6-2, in this season’s Division 1 men’s college hockey national championship, a narrative that had been in the works for a long time began to bubble. Young, high-end teams can’t win. The Terriers had just lost. Boston College, the No. 1 team throughout most of the season, lost to Denver again — this time before the Frozen Four.

    The MIAA boys and girls hockey seasons ended in late March, which is now almost three months ago. Catholic Memorial won a thrilling game over St. John's Shrewsbury to win the MIAA D1 boys title, while Division 2 featured Billerica needing two overtimes to oust Canton. In Division 3, Nauset took down Medfield and Winthrop beat Dedham by five goals in Division 4. In Division 1 girls hockey, Hingham was a wagon all season.

    What a season it was in New England boys and girls prep hockey. Roughly three months ago, Cushing edged Dexter Southfield for the boys Elite 8 title, while Phillips Andover and Kimball Union took home the Large and Small School championships, respectively. On the girls side, Loomis Chaffee went on an incredible run to win the Elite 8. Deerfield earned the Large School trophy, while New Hampton finished on top of the Small School field yet again.

    The difference between Jake Boguniecki before and after he stepped onto the ice for Mid Fairfield tryouts was profound. Boguniecki was coming up on the end of his first year of PeeWees when his father, Eric, got a call from Sean Haggerty, a friend of his, who was coaching Mid Fairfield’s top ’09 team. “Why don’t you bring Jake down?” Haggerty asked. Eric Boguniecki was hesitant. Jake had been playing for the Wonderland Wizards in Bridgeport, Conn.
