History was made on Tuesday night when longtime Newton County Schools (NCS) employee Chandra Mitchell was named the inaugural Newton County Schools district-wide “HERO.”The HERO award is a new initiative designed by NCS to recognize its classified employees. These employees are often considered “behind-the-scenes” workers, and can include employees such as paraprofessionals, custodians, support staff and more.

NEWTON COUNTY – Despite its fancy name, the Newton County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted against “Project Paradise.”The commissioners met for nearly 4.5 hours on Tuesday, where one of the main discussion points was consideration to rezone 175 acres on Old Atlanta Highway from residential to light industrial. The owners of the property, Doris and Allen George Fuller, reportedly intended to sell the land to Euphoric Development.

Former Newton Ram standout Jakai Newton will officially be searching for a new home. Newton formally declared his intent to transfer from Indiana University on March 24 after entering the NCAA transfer portal. Newton has struggled with injuries throughout his basketball career, which has kept him off the floor. The 2023 Newton Ram graduate suffered a knee injury during his senior year of high school. The same injury cost him his first season at Indiana.

NEWTON COUNTY – A teacher at Alcovy High School is facing heavy criticism for giving students an “ill-advised assignment.”On Wednesday morning, a photo circulated on social media of what appeared to be an assignment asking students to evaluate the March 18 Senior Skip Day shooting at Denny Dobbs Park. Salem High School student Justin Etienne, 18, was a bystander at the park when the conflict broke out. He was shot and succumbed to his wounds that evening.

On her “Lindsey for District 3” Facebook page, which she has posted regularly on since her suspension, Lindsey accused The News of withholding information from the public regarding her ongoing federal case and subsequent suspension from county office by Governor Brian Kemp.
