DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have dropped one veteran left-handed pitcher to make room for another. Matt Gage, who threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in his brief stint with Detroit, was designated for assignment on Thursday to create a roster spot for Dietrich Enns, who was selected from Triple-A Toledo to start Thursday’s game. A New York native, Gage played his college ball at Siena and was drafted in the 10th round by the San Francisco Giants in 2014.

DETROIT -- One big swing was enough for the Athletics to beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Wednesday night at Comerica Park. The Tigers (50-31) reached the midpoint of the season on a 100-win pace. They’ll play the rubber match of the three-game series against the A’s (33-49) on Thursday. Tigers starter Jack Flaherty walked four batters over the first four innings but managed to avoid damage all but once.

DETROIT -- Former Detroit Tigers pitcher José Ureña has found a new home. Was there ever any doubt? Ureña signed a minor-league contract with the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday and was assigned to Triple-A St. Paul. He has already pitched for -- and been released by -- the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2025. Ureña, 33, signed a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Tigers prior to the 2021 season after spending parts of six seasons with the Miami Marlins.

Spencer Turnbull’s brief tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays is over. The Jays designated Turnbull for assignment on Wednesday to clear a roster spot for the return of another former Detroit Tiger: veteran right-hander Max Scherzer. Turnbull, 32, appeared in just three games over roughly two weeks with Toronto, allowing five runs on 12 hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked four.
