Tucked into a nondescript side street in East Providence is one of the country’s oldest indoor tennis courts. The Indoor Tennis Court, as it’s aptly known, was commissioned by socialite and philanthropist Lyra Brown Nickerson in 1913. It opened with a Halloween-themed “tennis ball” on Oct. 31, 1914 — complete with a tennis match, witch hats, a buffet dinner and dancing — and has been hosting tennis royalty ever since.

Let me begin this story with a confession: I don’t know how to pronounce my own name. For as long as I can remember, I have felt uncomfortable introducing myself to anyone. The German people I grew up with tripped over my name’s melodic sounds, while my parents’ Vietnamese friends had trouble understanding my heavy accent. The Germans got around the problem by not addressing me by name at all.

At Tokyo Station, I saw someone willingly cease being themself. I’d heard it was becoming an issue, but this was the first time I’d actually seen it happen. Wait, we just got here, wow, no way, the city really is a scary place. My friend Cocoro and I transmitted these thoughts back and forth as we blinked away, taking snapshots. By the time we left the station, giddy with excitement—Tokyo! We’re in Tokyo!—more than half of the person’s P-Pod had already melted off, forty-two yards ahead of us.
