If you were the Prime Minister, I doubt you would choose to make the most important announcement of your year standing in the pouring rain getting drenched. Whatever your political leanings, I suspect you reckon that Rishi Sunak looked a complete drip when he announced the UK would go to the polls on 4th July. Inevitably, his colleagues have leapt to his defence saying he could not control the weather and that it shows he is a man determined to carry on whatever the circumstance. Nice try.

The UK company that provides a quarter of the population – including me – with drinking water is in trouble. “Thames Water” is on the verge of collapse after shareholders refused to provide extra cash to the debt-ridden firm. There is a real chance that the Government will have to step in and take over the company. It won’t be the first time this kind of thing has happened. NatWest Bank collapsed 15 years ago and had to be bailed out by the taxpayer.

I am running the risk this week of being disciplined at work. If my boss reads this (and she often does) she will discover I have done something naughty. Recently, I posted a picture on social media of her speaking at a conference. But before I uploaded the image, I “enhanced” it. My phone has an AI system embedded into it and it asked me if I would like to make some changes to improve the snap I had taken. I pressed the “yes” button, and the phone did the rest.

British history buffs will know that it is 490 years ago today that Henry VIII severed ties with the Roman Catholic Church, setting up the Church of England. The sole reason for doing this was so that he could rid himself of his wife, Katherine of Aragon. The Pope would not grant Henry an annulment of the marriage, so Henry dispensed with the Pope instead.

The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, made a sudden and unusual statement to the nation yesterday evening. The trigger for this speech appeared to be the election of George Galloway as an MP by the people of Rochdale. The Prime Minister is obviously no fan of Mr Galloway and it is clear they will not collaborate once the new MP sets foot in the Palace of Westminster. Based on last night’s speech, I doubt that Rishi Sunak will even want to exchange glances with the new Member of Parliament.

The Speaker of the House of Commons got himself into a bit of bother this week. Parliament descended into chaos as politicians were angry that the Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, had changed procedures against tradition. Nobody actually mentioned the fact that these “traditions” were only set up in 1979 and had been broken since. Never let the facts get in the way of a good argument if you are a politician. Sir Lindsay apologised for his error – twice.

Over the past couple of weeks, politicians in the UK have been suggesting that smartphones should be banned for children. And if that can’t happen, they want access to social media switched off for youngsters. British politicians are not alone. There have been similar calls in the USA, Spain, France, and China. People are realising the harmful impact of the “always on” echo-chamber of the smartphone.
