Green MSP Maggie Chapman has survived a vote to remove her as deputy convener of a Holyrood committee. It follows her comments about the Supreme Court ruling that the term woman refers to a biological female under equality law. Chapman condemned what she described as bigotry, prejudice and hatred coming from the court. MSPs defeated the motion from the Scottish Conservatives by four votes to three. Parents who fought for single-sex toilets to be provided in state schools across Scotland have said the win is “bittersweet” after a judge ruled in their favour. Leigh Hurley and Sean Stratford launched a legal challenge against Scottish Borders Council after it installed gender neutral lavatories at Earlston Primary School in 2023. Before launching the legal challenge, Ms Hurley and Mr Stratford said their concerns were dismissed.

Parents who won a court case which will now enforce single sex toilets in schools say they felt like they were “treated like idiots” by their local authority. The Court of Session ordered that all schools in Scotland must provide separate toilets for boys and girls. Scottish Borders Council has admitted it had been wrong to flout the law.

“I don’t want to regret not taking a stand” – that was the message from the First Minister on Wednesday as he convened a summit to tackle the influence of the far right. John Swinney called the meeting in Glasgow, which included political leaders, public and civic organisations, to discuss disinformation and protecting democracy. Reform UK were not invited, and the Scottish Conservative leader refused to attend – labelling it a “talking shop”.
