We are only a couple of sleeps away from the start of the first Grand Tour of the men’s calendar. Yes, the Giro d’Italia 2025 gets underway on Friday 9th May, with the first of three opening stages in Albania. From there, the peloton will snake their way up the Italian mainland, tackling the iconic Mortirolo and Colle delle Finestre en route to a Roman finale on Sunday 1st June.

The Giro d’Italia is all about the climbs. Often the scene of GC moves and heroic efforts, the mountains are where the Italian Grand Tour will be won and lost once more in 2025. This year’s Giro will take the riders through the Alps and the Apennines during the three-week expedition around Italy (and Albania). Starting across the Adriatic, the race will get stuck into the mountains as early as week one, with the first summit finish scheduled for Stage 7.

La Vuelta Femenina is the first Grand Tour of the season and takes place from 4th May to 10th May. The seven-stage race will see riders traverse northern Spain east to west, beginning in Barcelona with a team time-trial and culminating atop the Alto de Cotobello in Asturias. The race has taken many forms despite only being a decade old.

At the end of 2024, XDS-Astana lurked in the doldrums of the UCI rankings, sat miles adrift of their WorldTour rivals, looking a dreary shadow of themselves and a far cry from the team that once championed Grand Tours and Monuments during their heyday in the 2010s. With Mark Cavendish having retired and a new sponsor on board, the team had reached a pivotal point in their 20-year history.
