ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — In a heartwarming reunion, a Roanoke County student got a surprise visit from her father coming home from his military service. Penn Forest Elementary School held a welcome home for Lt. Commander Clark, who surprised his daughter, Olivia, after a 10-month deployment with the Navy. As Clark walked into the school with flowers in hand, he was met with cheers from the entire cafeteria.

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — Wythe County is offering in-person help to residents who have experienced damages or losses due to the effects of Hurricane Helene and need help completing disaster recovery forms. Beginning October 7, the Wythe County Department of Emergency Services will provide FEMA disaster assistance support at its office located at 440 W. Franklin Street in Wytheville.

(WSET) — The entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia will remain closed as crews continue assessing the damage from Hurricane Helene. To help with recovery efforts, the National Park Service has deployed its Eastern Incident Management Team. It brings specialized skills and resources to support the parkway with employee emergency needs, emergency stabilization of affected park resources, and damage assessments.

GILES GOUNTY, Va. (WSET) — One man is behind bars after a drug bust inGiles County on Thursday. At approximately 4:00 p.m., the Giles County Sheriff's Office, along with members of the Virginia State Police Clandestine Lab Team, executed a search warrant in the 200 block of Bluegrass Trail in Newport. The sheriff's office said investigators seized material consistent with that used to produce DMT, a potent hallucinogenic drug and a Schedule I controlled substance.

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — An emergency shelter has been opened at Fort Chiswell High School for Wythe County residents who are evacuating due to flooding. Much of the Commonwealth has seen widespread flooding, wind and tornado damage, and power outages as the remnants of Hurricane Helene battered the East Coast. For information on safe travel routes to the shelter, please call the Wythe County Emergency Communications Center non-emergency line at 276-223-6001. For urgent help, call 911.
