The stakes couldn’t have been higher when a piece of mail arrived at Krystal Harris’ St. Cloud home last year. Addressed to her was an envelope from the district court. Its pages held the court’s order — a decision that would determine the legal relationship Harris could have with her son. Inside, big, bolded letters spelled out “DENIED.” When Harris saw them, she broke down. Her last attempt to reunite with her son had failed.

During her senior year of high school, Madelyne Yang sat down with her counselor to strategize about college applications. Together, the pair identified Augsburg University, a private institution in Minneapolis, as a viable option for Yang. The school was a good fit for a number of reasons: the liberal arts education, the breadth of academic programs and its campus, located in the heart of the city.

Leadership at a prominent 5-year-old advocacy group for Minnesota foster youth will change hands next month. Hoang Murphy, founder of Foster Advocates, is stepping down as executive director of the St. Paul nonprofit at the end of June. His replacement will be former board member Nikki Beasley, the organization announced this week. At Foster Advocates, young people who have been impacted by the child welfare system in Minnesota are the driving force behind legislative changes in their state.
