If you send a letter or package overseas, you probably don’t think too much about the journey it takes – the hours spent travelling across borders by rail, air or sea, and the multiple hands it passes through. And if things go well, it will arrive in just a few days, leaving you and the recipient none the wiser. International payments work similarly. Money can travel very different routes to the same destination, leading to significant differences in cost, speed of payments and customer service.

People of all ages and walks of life are affected by scams – but the types of scams we see and the way they affect us can change as we age. Fraudsters regularly target older people in the hopes of stealing substantial savings built up over a lifetime, with older scam victims losing an average of almost £4,000 each, according to 2024 research from charity Independent Age.

Dear Which? I was helping with a secondary school event to address teacher recruitment shortages. An attendee claimed to have paid for a ticket, so we let her in and invoiced her employer afterwards. The employer then produced evidence of having paid for a ticket – but it had paid scammers. We found that a scammer had cloned the event on Eventbrite and even created a discounted ‘early bird’ ticket costing 25% less. I reported this to Eventbrite but was disappointed by its investigation.

A letter, call, email, text or doorstep visit demanding debt payment can be an alarming and confusing experience – particularly if it comes out of the blue. If you don't recognise the debt, you need to be wary and verify the request before paying up, as not all such demands are genuine. In one recent case highlighted by BBC Radio 4's 'You and Yours', a victim was tricked into paying a scammer who'd phoned him posing as a bailiff and threatening to seize his furniture. Which?

The UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC) has unveiled alarming new data on children's exposure to online scams to mark Safer Internet Day (11 February).
