It has become common knowledge that Benjamin Netanyahu did not hesitate to mobilize the far right, in both its nationalist and religious wings, in a campaign against the Oslo Accords and Yitzhak Rabin. The latter was portrayed wearing the uniform of a Nazi officer in an infamous poster by this campaign that eventually led to Rabin’s assassination in 1995.

If you are under pressure to do something but know that you can’t do anything, what do you do? Well, you do nothing but to appear to be doing something you invoke grand principles and grand sentiments. This is what French President Emmanuel Macron and his Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot have been doing in a rather quixotic way with regard to the ongoing tragedy in Gaza.

It is difficult to get the Sudanese people to agree on any political question. Continuous debate, unending disputes, and entrenched polarization have long defined the Sudanese political landscape. That has been the case since Sudan gained its independence nearly seven decades ago at the latest. Accordingly, it is not surprising that the sharp debate continues, in Sudanese outlets and pages, over Dr. Kamal El-Tayeb Idris’s appointment as Prime Minister.

The sanctions imposed by the United States on the Bashar al-Assad regime have been top of Syrians’ minds in the past five months since following the regime’s swift collapse in December 2024. The concept of "Global South" (as opposed to the "Global North") gained another boost in popularity with the war on Gaza. Language often tries its best to keep up with the split that divides our world. Initially, it was said that we are split into East and West, a binary that remained in usage for generations in both the "East" and the "West," and it still is. Both sides were ascribed particular traits, some derogatory and others laudatory, depending on who was ascribing them.

If the students back in 1968 were divided into rebellious, longhaired pukes and conservative, close-cropped jocks, with a lot of undecided in between, the current protests at Columbia — and at the growing number of other campuses to which they have spread — have witnessed personal and often ugly divisions between Jewish students and Arab or Muslim students or anyone perceived to be on the “wrong” side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Storms surround Syria, and some have hit neighboring countries. The latter have felt the impact domestically: Türkiye, its neighbor to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Lebanon to the west. The storms have also hit Israel, as can be seen in the struggle between Benjamin Netanyahu's government and its rivals, as well as the repercussions of its ongoing assault on the Palestinians.

The Biden administration has been hit with a wave of criticism following the secret meeting between the Americans and Iranians in Oman, where they discussed the Houthi escalation in the Red Sea. Much of the criticism, which has focused on its lax approach to the Iranians, is justified. This has indeed been a problem for a while now, dating back to Barack Obama’s time in office. However, is opening secret channels with the enemy, whoever it may be, a mistake? Certainly not.
