Palau has raised its minimum wage by 75 cents per hour to US$4.25 an hour. Senate passed a US$13 million supplemental budget for the 2024 fiscal year, which included the minimum wage increase. It increases the 2024 budget from $119m to $132m, surpassing pre-pandemic funding levels.

Drought conditions show some improvement across much of the US-affiliated Pasific Islands, but some areas are still struggling. In an update late last week, the US National Weather Service said trade wind disturbances have brought much-needed rainfall to areas of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the southern islands of the Marshalls, and to Palau.

Extreme droughts in the Western Pacific region are expected to persist over the next three months. Parts of the Marshall Islands, Guam, Palau, Mariana Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) are now designated under extreme and exceptional drought. These conditions are causing a massive strain on agriculture, water supply, and daily life for residents in FSM's Yap Proper, the atoll of Wotje in the northern Marshall Islands, and other nearby islands in the Marshalls.

North Pacific countries continue to face extreme weather conditions. Marshall Islands, Guam, Palau, Mariana Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia have been experiencing extreme droughts, with rainfall now expected as late as June. The Micronesian region has received below-normal rainfall since last month, with temperatures soaring to 30 degrees.

This week drought conditions in parts of the Micronesia region have been upgraded from severe to extreme. The US Drought Monitor upgraded drought conditions in the Federated States of Micronesia from severe to extreme, particularly on the island state of Yap. Also facing extreme drought is the atoll of Wotje in the Marshall Islands. Assessment teams and residents from Yap state are reporting agricultural strain, with taro patches drying up, coconuts drying out and crops yellowing.

The $21,198,656 firm-fixed-price contract includes a base period and options, which if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $21,711,746. Vigor was the sole bidder for the project.

Over 70 countries, including seven Pacific Islands Forum member nations have signed up to the biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement, also referred to as the UN high seas treaty. The BBNJ treaty was adopted in June this year, after almost two decades of negotiations. It was officially open for signing by UN member states on Wednesday, Spetember 20 at its headquarters in New York.
