More than two and a half years after her daughter and two grandchildren were killed in their home, Sylvie Guertin is pleading with Quebec’s justice minister to help let her family grieve in peace. In December, Mohamed Al Ballouz, who now identifies as Levana Ballouz, was convicted of murdering Synthia Bussieres, and suffocating their two young children, Eliam and Zac. Ballouz was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years.

One month shy of her 113th birthday, the oldest person in Canada is sharing some of her well earned wisdom. The country's oldest living woman, Margaret Romans, was born in Latvia in 1912 and moved to Montreal in 1947 and says she's thankful to be here. What keeps her going? Gratitude, curiosity, and always looking forward, she says. "I say thank you God for bringing me and my family to this good country," she told Global News in an interview on Tuesday at her seniors' residence.

A Brossard, Que., resident who was found guilty of killing her family in 2022, will not appeal the guilty verdict. Mohamad Al Ballouz, who now identifies as a woman and goes by Levana Ballouz, was sentenced to life in prison, with no chance of parole for 25 years. A jury found Ballouz guilty on Dec. 16, 2024, of fatally stabbing her partner Synthia Bussières and their two sons, five-year-old Eliam and two-year-old Zac, in 2022.
