An advocate for storm-affected Aucklanders says abandoned homes are still a magnet for looters, even two years on. Auckland Council has approved a plan guiding its use of storm-affected land bought from homeowners following the 2023 storms. That included maintenance for houses which had been empty since their owners were forced to leave two years ago.

The stars have aligned to drive petrol costs down, says a fuel price tracker. Crude oil prices have plummeted in the wake of US president Donald Trump's ever-changing tariff policies. "They started to rise at the beginning of April but now we're seeing the beginnings of what looks like quite a sharp drop off," said Mike Newton, director of Gaspy, a website that compares prices between fuel stations.

A group representing property investors is hopeful the government's new granny flat policy will provide a much needed boost to the country's housing supply. A planned law change would allow home owners to build granny flats up to 70 square metres without the need for a building consent. Property Investors Federation spokesperson Matt Ball applauded the change, noting many homeowners found the existing rules to be needlessly restrictive.

Hoteliers hope to convince Auckland Council not to go ahead with its proposed bed tax, instead calling for a nationwide solution. Submissions closed on Friday for Auckland Council's latest Annual Plan, which includes a proposal for a 'bed night' visitor levy of 2.5 to 3 percent on short term accommodation. Hospitality NZ chief executive Steve Armitage said the industry supported a bed tax, but not in the form Auckland Council was proposing.
