The pace of events involving Children's Health Ireland (CHI) is truly astonishing. The issues are also incredibly serious, given they involve surgeries on children, many of which have been deemed to have been unnecessary. The big outstanding question which no one appears able to answer fully is why this has been allowed to happen? Children's Health Ireland (CHI) is a separate entity to the HSE, with its own board and management. It is funded by the HSE.

The heads of the terms of reference for an expert panel to review dysplasia of the hip operations in children are going before the Cabinet. It follows the report into hip surgery last week which found that almost 80% of surgeries were not necessary at National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh and 60% were not necessary at CHI Temple Street. That audit covered 2021-2023, and as a result parents of children who had these operations going back to 2010 are also being offered reviews.

An independent clinical audit of some hip surgeries on children here is due to be published today. The audit covers the years 2021 to 2023 and was commissioned by Children's Health Ireland. It has looked at a randomised, anonymised sample of dysplasia of the hip surgeries in a number of children, by some doctors at the CHI hospitals at Temple Street and Crumlin and separately at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh.

The independent Expert Evaluation of Ireland's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic has today launched a public consultation phase. It is inviting individuals, families, workers, carers, communities and businesses to share their experiences. The consultation phase is one element of a wider programme of work. The chairperson of the team, Professor Anne Scott, said this was a first step in building a clear and honest picture of how Covid-19 was lived and felt by individuals, families and communities.
