SONOMA VALLEY, CA — Bigfoot sightings could soon become a lot more common in California — at least on T-shirts, flags, bumper stickers, and even some official state documents — thanks to a proposed bill hat would make the Sasquatch, the official state cryptid. A cryptid is an animal that has never been proven to exist, such as Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. The bill, known as AB 666, was introduced by Assemblymember Chris Rogers, who represents California's 2nd District.

Whale watchers reported seeing the trapped whale the evening of Tuesday, April 8, according to NOAA. The agency then put together a trained team to help free the whale the following day. “The whale was anchored in place because of the trap about 100 feet down on the sea floor and was having difficulty coming to the surface to breathe,” Justin Greenman, assistant California stranding coordinator for NOAA Fisheries’ West Coast Region, said in a statement Wednesday.

LONG BEACH, CA β A semi-truck carrying macadamia nut oil caught fire after overturning on the Artesia (91) Freeway at Long Beach Boulevard Wednesday night. Authorities responded around 7:56 p.m. to the area, where they found the semi-truck on fire and blocking several freeway lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver was still in the vehicle at the time, though authorities did not say whether they were injured in the crash.

LONG BEACH, CA β Authorities shut down the northbound lanes of the Long Beach (710) Freeway at Del Amo Boulevard Thursday morning after a gas tanker leaked large amounts of oil. According to an alert by the California Highway Patrol, a biodiesel tanker began leaking fuel around 4 a.m. The CHP issued a SigAlert expected to last several hours. Los Angeles County Fire personnel have been working to contain the leak. It's unclear exactly how many gallons have spilled.

The stings, known as Shoulder Tap Operations, took place in Long Beach between February and March, according to police. The LBPD said the operation involves using a decoy, under law enforcement supervision, who loiters outside a liquor store letting customers know they are underage and asking if they can buy them alcohol.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA — Beloved surfer and filmmaker Greg Browning has died after more than a year-long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, according to a report by the Daily Breeze. He was 50. Browning, who grew up in Hermosa Beach and was inducted into the city's Surfers Walk of Fame in 2024, served as an inspiration for many surfers in the area, according to the report. Browning was diagnosed with ALS in 2023, according to the report.

LONG BEACH, CA — A man who was fatally shot over the weekend during an argument near the Grand Prix in Long Beach has been identified. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as 21-year-old Brandon Villareal. His city of residence was not immediately available. Long Beach police say Villareal and a suspect or suspects were arguing around 5:50 p.m. in the 0 block of Cedar Walk. At some point, Villareal was shot multiple times, according to police.
