    If you’ve spotted a little wide-eyed, colorful figure peeking out from a downtown Bellingham nook, congratulations — you’re a quarter of the way through the city’s newest scavenger hunt. The four sculptures are part of “Find Billy!,” a public art installation by the Seahurst, King County, art studio Uckiood, and the latest project from the city’s Downtown Activation and Beautification Program.

    Mount Vernon High School celebrated its 365 graduates Thursday, June 12 at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett. Thousands were in attendance at the bilingual ceremony, while others tuned in to an online stream. First-year Mount Vernon School District Superintendent Victor Vergara delivered a speech confirming the students earned their diplomas and celebrated their success as expected, but also struck a more poignant note while referencing the current political climate.

    Hundreds of children, students and community members crowded along First Street in the heart of downtown Mount Vernon to watch the victory parade of the 3A state champion Mount Vernon High School baseball team Thursday, June 4. Proceeded by the school’s folklorico dance group and cheerleaders, players and coaches showed off their new hardware from the top of a city police tactical vehicle and firetruck as they rolled down the street.

    Perhaps one of the bumpiest roads in the city, the bricks running through the center of Harris Avenue in Fairhaven give a glimpse into the district’s history. The bricks are a remnant of the city’s street car system which operated from 1891 to 1938, according to Whatcom County historian Jeff Jewell. Originally, Harris Avenue was a wooden plank street. Although discussions about paving it began as early as 1906, it wasn’t until 1915 that Harris was fully paved between 4th and 14th streets.

    Western Washington University men’s basketball ended its season with a bittersweet 90-79 win over Simon Fraser University at home Feb. 25. The Vikings finished the season 15-13 overall, but 8-10 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, putting them a single win short of qualifying for the postseason. “I feel really proud of these guys,” Western coach Tony Dominguez said.
