Hundreds of children, students and community members crowded along First Street in the heart of downtown Mount Vernon to watch the victory parade of the 3A state champion Mount Vernon High School baseball team Thursday, June 4. Proceeded by the school’s folklorico dance group and cheerleaders, players and coaches showed off their new hardware from the top of a city police tactical vehicle and firetruck as they rolled down the street.

Perhaps one of the bumpiest roads in the city, the bricks running through the center of Harris Avenue in Fairhaven give a glimpse into the district’s history. The bricks are a remnant of the city’s street car system which operated from 1891 to 1938, according to Whatcom County historian Jeff Jewell. Originally, Harris Avenue was a wooden plank street. Although discussions about paving it began as early as 1906, it wasn’t until 1915 that Harris was fully paved between 4th and 14th streets.

Western Washington University men’s basketball ended its season with a bittersweet 90-79 win over Simon Fraser University at home Feb. 25. The Vikings finished the season 15-13 overall, but 8-10 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, putting them a single win short of qualifying for the postseason. “I feel really proud of these guys,” Western coach Tony Dominguez said.

SPOKANE – In their third state championship game appearance in program history, the Lummi Nation Blackhawks topped Almira/Coulee-Hartline 53-50 on Saturday, March 8 in the Spokane Arena. It was the team’s first state championship in 10 years. Lummi junior guard Jerome Toby led the game with 23 points and added five steals in a trademark scrappy Blackhawk defensive performance. SPOKANE — No. 2 Lummi boys defeated No. 5 Neah Bay, 49-45, in a back-and-forth semifinal bout on Friday, March 7, and the Blackhawks advanced to the 1B state tournament championship match at the Spokane Arena. With the win, the Blackhawks will move on to a marquee title matchup with No. 1 Almira/Coulee-Hartline at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 8. Lummi last won the 1B state title in 2015. Friday’s game moved quickly from the opening tip-off.
