Created in 2010, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) is an international grassroots solidarity movement working to end the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Their new mission – to deliver 5,500 tons of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza – has been temporarily halted after Guinea Bissau decided to remove its flag from two vessels on 24 April 2024. The flotilla had been set to sail from Turkey towards Gaza.

Instead of accepting the Right’s talking points, progressives should stick to their core values, embracing hope as the key to electoral success in troubled times. When Green parties performed surprisingly well in elections in Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany in 2018, they called it a “Green Wave of Hope”.

I cambiamenti climatici provocati dalle attività umane stanno aggravando la povertà e l’instabilità politica, intensificando i conflitti per le risorse fondamentali come l’acqua, e spingendo sempre più persone a migrare. Secondo l’Alto commissariato delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati (Unhcr), il 90 per cento dei rifugiati nel mondo oggi proviene dagli stati più esposti all’emergenza climatica.

Quando l’estate scorsa un gruppo di profughi siriani e palestinesi è rimasto bloccato su un isolotto infestato dagli scorpioni alla frontiera tra la Grecia e la Turchia, nel fiume Evros, le autorità greche ci hanno messo più di dieci giorni a inviare soccorsi. Sostenevano di non riuscire a localizzarli, nonostante avessero ricevuto le loro precise coordinate geografiche.
