Sun Peaks Resort in British Columbia has invested around $170,000 in 18 massive insulated mats designed to preserve snow throughout the summer months to be reused when the open back up in the fall. Castanet reports the mats are made by the Finnish company Snow Secure and although widely adopted in Europe, Sun Peaks is the first resort in Canada to use them. Sun Peaks hopes to preserve 14,000 cubic meters of snow on its OSB ski trail which they will uncover and spread on the race center course.

An Arizona hiker required rescue after getting stranded near the summit of Granite Mountain after following a series of unofficial trail markers in the form of stacked rocks known as cairns. Thankfully the lost hiker had a working cellphone and was able to call for help. Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies and Search and Rescue teams used his phone to pinpoint his location and safely guided him out of the backcountry.

The competition for which Michigan ski resort would close the latest was conceded by Mount Bohemia back on April 27th when they stopped spinning their lifts despite receiving an incredible 314 inches of snow (26.1 feet) over the 2024/2025 winter. The Upper Peninsula resort was quick to congratulate Boyne Mountain for outlasting them in their annual “who can stay open the latest” contest and in a classy move directed Michigan skiers to head to Boyne to keep the season alive.

Drone pilot Orion Herman just released his selects from the Big Sky Resort pond skim event and they are amazing. We had previously mentioned it was nice to see Big Sky put a bit of budget into covering the return of their legendary pond skim after a 6-year hiatus and Herman’s expert flying played a large part in the resort’s official recap video.
