All my life, I saw my mother take odd jobs to earn extra income. I used to watch her leave early in the morning to open the local Burger King before sunrise. Though she didn't attend college, she had her GED, a strong work ethic, and a determination to build a life for me where I didn't feel like we were missing out. In addition to working at Burger King, she also served in a friend's food truck, worked at a convenience store, and eventually at our church's day care.

June is Pride Month, a time to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Activists like Marsha P. Johnson and Larry Kramer helped fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the 1980s. My husband and I don't have many major vices. We don't drink, smoke, or do drugs, but we do have one consistent decadence: ordering takeout and delivery. The luxury of ordering from any restaurant we want instead of cooking is one that we indulge in regularly. After all, my husband works full time, I handle our home and schooling for our teens, and I live with a chronic illness that zaps the rest of my energy. So, a night free from cooking is always a much-needed win.

In 2023, I finished my Ph.D. in biomedical engineering with no job lined up and, honestly, no idea what to do next. To this day, I'm not entirely sure what went through my mind when I decided to pursue a Ph.D. Maybe I wanted to delay entering the job market a little longer. Maybe it felt like the natural course after finishing a master's, especially since many of my friends were doing the same. It took me a while to realize the lab life wasn't for me.
