Since moving to our house a few years ago, my husband and I have spent hours working on the backyard, making it more fun and functional. From adding a garden to a massive play area, it's a space that the whole family can enjoy. It's been a ton of work — and there's still plenty to be done — but it's a growing work in progress that my two kids (ages 6 and 8), my neighbors, and I can all enjoy together.

I got married for the first time the day after I turned 18. A year later, my first child was born; I was just 19 years old. The next few years would bring two more children, along with the responsibilities and costs of raising a family in the US. My first wife and I worked multiple jobs and side hustles to pay for our family of five. We were a middle-class family that prioritized our children and making sure they were fed, loved, and cared for.

My father and I have a generally good relationship. But when the opportunity to merge our professional forces and work together presented itself, I was concerned. I had slowly been growing my public relations agency, Chirichella Associates, based in Italy, which I began in 2021. My specialty is working with female-run businesses and Italian businesses. My company started growing very quickly, and I began receiving requests on a weekly basis.

The night before I left for my senior year at Yale, my mom and I joked that we would find each other again in the next lifetime, but as classmates. We imagined ourselves sitting in the back row of some old lecture hall, whispering about which New Haven spot to try next for dinner. "And Dad?" I asked. "He would probably be in the very first row," Mom laughed. "You know he loves to talk."That fantasy came to life in May when my immigrant parents finally came to visit me at Yale for the first time.

In 2021, my husband and I were only one year into postgraduate life and very new to marriage. At the time, our financial literacy left a lot to be desired, and being new parents only complicated all of this. As our son grew month after month, we started thinking more seriously about his future and that of our family. The phrase heard so often, "The days are long, but the years are short," started to feel very real as we navigated the first year with our son.
