After a pandemic-induced pause, Riva del Garda (Italy) will once again play host to the (44th) International Symposium on Capillary Chromatography and the (21st) GC×GC Symposia, on May 17–22, 2026. Long-time leader of the event Luigi Mondello shares the driving forces behind the relaunch: a surge in chromatographic innovation, a need for in-person exchange, and a global community eager to reconnect – especially at Riva del Garda. With Ben CravattEach person in our lab learns both the chemistry and biology of what we are doing – including the analytical chemistry of understanding how to run mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments – so that when they leave the lab, they feel comfortable operating at that interface.

Does analytical science have a reputation problem? Are we struggling to attract talent to the field? If so, what can we do about it? We’re exploring these questions with a series of articles (here are episodes one and two). Here, Gert Desmet, Full Professor at the Chemical Engineering Department, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, weighs in.

I joined Waters as an NMR spectroscopist after completing my chemistry PhD back in 1987. I was mainly responsible for carrying out NMR analyses – focusing on stationary phases for HPLC columns and sample preparation devices. As the years progressed, I moved up in the company and worked on a new family of HPLC columns based on high purity silica particles – these became the Symmetry™ Column brand.

Overall, I think that chromatography-mass spectrometry is the most significant development. In the past, they were two fields that were not connected, but now, they form a mutually beneficial relationship with lots of synergy. When I took over from Hans Poppe 24 years ago, there was not a single mass spectrometer in the group, and now we have more than half a dozen. Mass spectrometry has developed fantastically.
